Fallen Soldier

Fallen Soldier 2007. 2-block print . 66 cm x 81 cm. Edition of 40 on Somerset paper .

What a hostile environment a pine-wood can be, with the damp darkness , the broken branches.

And when forestry has been harvested , that grim and uncrossable terrain of stumps and crevices looks almost like the ruin of the trenches in the Great War.

I had great pleasure taking some 9 days each on the cutting of these two blocks , listerning to music and audio-books , an engrossing chore .

It's actually not a forest at all , but part of the small shelter-belt that most farmers here plant against a strong prevailing wind .Once they get too tall , they're not really helpful any more - especially as the sun occasionally attempts to come from the same quarter .
